Headsets and chat audio through the Cronus Zen: what works on Xbox, PS5 and Switch
Why headset audio sometimes disappears when a Cronus Zen is in the chain, which connection types work (USB dongle, USB headset, PS Link, controller 3.5 mm jack, console Bluetooth), the DualShock 4 v1 audio limitation, and the reliable fixes.

Quick answer
Whether a headset works through a Cronus Zen depends on how it connects, not on the headset. Anything with its own USB or 2.4 GHz link to the console works. A headset in the controller's 3.5 mm jack works only with the controller wired to the Zen and, on PS5 with Zen LINK, only while console Bluetooth is on.
Why does adding a Zen affect audio at all?
The Zen sits between the controller and the console and re-creates the controller as a USB device. Game input passes through cleanly, but a controller's headset jack is a separate audio channel that the console normally provides over the controller's own link. Whether the Zen can carry that channel depends on the platform, the controller and how the controller is attached.
Headsets that never touch the controller are unaffected. That single fact solves most audio problems.
Which headset connections work?
Collective Minds publishes a compatibility table that is worth memorising:
| How the headset connects | Through a Zen |
|---|---|
| USB 2.4 GHz dongle in the console | Yes |
| USB headset or USB DAC in the console | Yes |
| PS Link (newer PlayStation headsets) | Yes |
| 3.5 mm jack on the controller | Only with the controller wired to the Zen, and only while console Bluetooth is on |
| Bluetooth headset paired to the console | No |
The pattern: a headset with its own path to the console works; a headset that depends on the controller's link or on the console's Bluetooth radio is fragile.
Why does Bluetooth matter so much on PS5?
Zen LINK's PS5 Native Mode requires you to turn the console's Bluetooth off in system settings. Anything relying on that radio stops working at the same moment. The controller jack path is one of those things, which is why owners report losing headset audio right after finishing Zen LINK setup.
The official guide's fix is direct: use a USB headset or a USB dongle. Almost every wireless gaming headset ships with a 2.4 GHz dongle, and PS Link headsets are unaffected because PS Link is its own 2.4 GHz link.
What about the controller's 3.5 mm jack specifically?
Two conditions must both hold:
- The controller is connected to the Zen over USB, not Bluetooth. The PS5 page says there is no 3.5 mm audio or microphone support when the controller is paired to the Zen wirelessly.
- On PS5, console Bluetooth is on, which conflicts with Zen LINK Native Mode.
On Xbox the second condition does not apply, and many owners use an official Xbox controller wired to A1 with a headset in the jack. Collective Minds' wording is cautious: "many official controller USB setups are compatible", but with the variety of headsets, controllers and consoles it cannot promise every combination, particularly with third-party controllers. Try it; if it fails, move the headset to a USB path.
Which DualShock 4 do I have?
This trips up PS4 and crossover users constantly. There are two DualShock 4 models:
- DS4 v1 (2013): no audio over USB. No headset, no controller speaker. Cannot be the auth controller in a PS4 crossover setup.
- DS4 v2 (2016): full audio over USB and works as the auth controller.
Spot the difference by the light bar: the v2 has a strip of light visible on the front of the touchpad. If your headset is dead on a DualShock 4 and nothing else helps, check the model first.
How does the Switch handle headsets?
Joy-Con and the Pro Controller have no wired headset connection at all. When the Switch is docked, the Zen enables wired headset support through a DualSense, DualShock 4 or Xbox controller instead, which is one of the more useful side effects of using a Zen on Switch. Handheld mode with an OTG adapter does not offer this.
Troubleshooting sequence
- Identify the headset's path. If it uses a dongle, USB or PS Link, the Zen is not the cause; check console audio output settings.
- If it uses the controller jack: wire the controller to the Zen. Bluetooth to the Zen never carries jack audio.
- On PS5 with Zen LINK: accept that the jack path conflicts with Native Mode. Move the headset to a USB dongle.
- Check the controller model. DS4 v1 has no audio.
- Check power. A headset drawing power through the controller adds to the load on the Zen's front ports; a powered hub can help. See power and hubs.
- Try an official controller. Third-party pads are where the official caveat applies most.
What about chat mix and mic monitoring?
Those are console or headset features, not Zen features. If the headset connects over USB or a dongle, the console's party chat, mic monitoring and game/chat balance behave exactly as without a Zen. Through the controller jack, the console still provides them but only while the audio path exists, so the fixes above apply.
The reliable recommendation
If you want to stop thinking about it, use a headset with a USB dongle or a USB cable to the console. It works on every platform the Zen supports, is unaffected by Zen LINK's Bluetooth requirement, and takes the controller out of the audio path entirely. Setup details per platform are in the setup hub.
